Takeuchi Kimiaki 竹内公明 Japanese, 1948-2011

Takeuchi Kimiaki started learning wheel throwing when he was a middle school student. Then he met his long life teacher, EZAKI Issei江崎一生, at the Tokoname Ceramic School. EZAKI was a pioneer who studied and recreated old Tokoname ware (Heian period – Kamakura period) which is one of six old kiln sites in Japan. Before him, Tokoname ware was forgotten. His pieces are based on traditional technique, yet the form is very modern. As a teacher, Ezaki was harsh and determined, especially for creating beautiful lines. Takeuchi pursued his teacher’s way. Often, the glaze is complimented by an ash glaze that shows off a myriad of colors which is the result of high technical control.
