The creamy, feldspar-rich Shino glaze shifts from tender pink with flashes of red to soft off-white tones across curved, cut, and rugged surfaces. A gentle shadow formed by the skillfully carved foot gives the impression that the work is floating, lending a sense of lightness to its otherwise strong presence.
Hayashi Shotaro (b. 1947) is the designated Important Intangible Cultural Property of Gifu Prefecture. Hayashi works in the tradition of Shino ware, first developed in Japan during the Momoyama period in the 16th century. His robust forms are complimented by a softness of surface glaze that invites the viewer to relish the pleasures of the Shino technique.
