Characterized by vibrant glazes and incredibly textured clay, Higashida Shigemasa's powerful Oribe ceramics feature lush pools and flows of glaze across craggy landscapes. He articulates these stunning terrains into dramatic vessels. Brilliant turquoise lakes of blue glaze occupy the crevices and valleys of his lush green stoneware works, whose dynamic surfaces and undulating crests recall wild mountains, rocky strata, and perilous cliff sides. His talent shines through in utilizing form as a way to compliment glaze and vice versa.
This ash glazed tea bowl has a highly evocative texture and flavor. The muted colors welcomes the winter season. Its gradating colors can be compared to poignant English pastoral landscapes. In particular, the stormy landscapes painted by John Constable, or the stormy, overcast clouds painted by Corot: those dark, shadowy rivers and ponds featured in pastoral scenes during the dusk.
