He descends from a long line of ceramicists, and began studying at an early age with his father. His early work adheres to the revivalist expressions of traditional Song dynasty style of celadon, but he has been making inventive forms, resulting in an original use of the medium since the early 1980s. Shinobu finds inspiration in nature, often taking formal clues from flora and fauna and translating them into elegant ceramic works of art.
The innate charm of Song dynasty celadon ceramics comprises a harmonious integration of natural forms. These silhouettes seamlessly find their place in Kawase Shinobu’s ceramic expressions. The profile of this tall graceful celadon porcelain vase mirrors the elegant form of a lotus stem, evoking strong Buddhist imagery.
Kawase oeuvre incorporates a rich tapestry of natural motifs using flowing, wheel-thrown forms. He is internationally celebrated as one of Japan’s most outstanding masters working within celadon glazing.
