A graceful scene of a bamboo grove is rendered on this Edo period blue and white plate. Expressive strokes in a bright cobalt blue underglaze conveys the overall effect of an energetic, refreshing evening scene: an insect flies across the grove in a flash. To the viewer, the rounded, bright colored plate seems to invoke the fullness of the moon, partially obscured by bamboo in the cool dusk. The object is a beautiful example of painted ceramics from the late Edo period.
