Fukami Sueharu 深見 陶治 Japanese, b. 1947

One of Japan’s most popular ceramic artists, Fukami Sueharu is a sculptor, artist, and potter born in 1947 who works in the celadon medium. He beautifully utilizes pure celadon blue to great and original effect. His mastery of celadon glaze allows him to produce a wide variety of blues: clear sky blue, deep rich aqua, pale blue-grey, and a pure blue that is almost white have all appeared in his oeuvre. He makes both functional and sculptural works, but all of his ceramics illustrate a purity of design and originality of spirit that are the mark of a true master.

The purity of Fukami's impeccable surface is a source of great pride for the artist, one that he feels conveys a sense of transcendent elegance. His celadon surfaces are inspired by Chinese Song Dynasty porcelain. Fukami’s ceramics are widely collected and can be found in many museum collections internationally. He is a treasured innovator of the celadon medium.
