Sakaegi Masatoshi was a ceramic artist who, as the founder of his design studio SAKAEGI, fostered talent and innovation in both porcelain and clay. Through his mentorship of emerging designers and contemporary artists, he helped dissolve the boundaries between artist, designer, potter, and creative director.
This vase is the 5th piece in Sakaegi's series titled "Surface Tension." In nature and physics, Surface tension is a property that causes the surface of a liquid at rest to contract to the smallest possible area, allowing lightweight objects, such as paper or pond-skaters, to float on the liquid's surface without sinking. Sakaegi, who was known for his mathematical precision in ceramics, was fascinated by this phenomenon and sought to convey it through the celadon glaze. The glaze drips thickly over the top of the vase, blanketing the mouth and neck, and appears to hang on the edge of the triangular form, intriguing the viewer with its suspended tension.
