CHAWAN: London, UK | 50 Tea bowls by contemporary Japanese ceramic makers

20 August - 1 September 2026

Dai Ichi Arts is pleased to present an inaugural summer exhibition in London, United Kingdom, dedicated to the Japanese ceramic tea bowl, or chawan: one of the most revered forms in Japanese art history and a vital site of innovation in contemporary ceramic practice.

This exhibition brings together 50 tea bowls by important Japanese contemporary ceramic artists who have reimagined the chawan through experimental forms, inventive glazing techniques, and expanded proportions. While rooted in the traditions of chanoyu (茶の湯), this group of works expands the expressive potential of the tea bowl form, introducing new vitality to the model as both a functional object and a sculptural work of art.

Presenting at 67 York Street Gallery in Marylebone, London, the tea bowls brings tactile and artistic expression within the gallery context, encouraging viewers' direct engagement with clay. Positioned between function and sculpture, each tea bowl not only as a vessel for use, but as an objet d’art in its own right. We warmly welcome you to join us in a new gallery space in the United Kingdom for the first time this summer!
