The celebrated ceramicist Suzuki Sansei (b. 1936) has devoted his life to mastering celadon glazes, exploring with exceptional skill the full expressive potential of this demanding medium.

This Guan-type celadon Sakazuki sake cup, has a softly rounded silhouette. Its harmonious proportions are enhanced by a luminous blue-green glaze. During the Song dynasty (960–1279), the finely veined crackle pattern that developed within the glaze matrix was highly prized. Created through a precise shrinkage process, the crackles enrich the softly lustrous, creamy blue-green surface, which diffuses light while retaining a refined matte quality.

Among the celebrated contemporary Japanese ceramicists, Suzuki Sansei has revived this aesthetic sense and tradition with deep sensitivity.
