Maeda Masahiro (b. 1948) is an internationally acclaimed ceramic artist and master of Iro-e (literally “colored picture”), renowned for his refined work in porcelain. He is a graduate of Tokyo University of the Arts, one of Japan's most prestigious fine arts institutions, and an extremely skilled maker who exhibits in galleries and museums around the world.

Color and shape are key in his Iro-e works: His Iro-e works are admired for their technical precision as well as their sense of play, where birds and elements of nature are woven seamlessly into geometric compositions. His use of color is careful and exacting. This tokkuri demonstrates his skill on a smaller scale, offering the rare opportunity to hold a master’s work in the palm of one’s hand.

Maeda follows the path of the professional artist, blending his inherited and highly trained craft techniques with artistic expression. Iro-e, meaning “colored picture,” is a Japanese decorative porcelain technique for decorating ceramics with overglaze enamels to create vivid polychrome designs. Developed in the mid-17th century by Sakaida Kakiemon in Arita, it involves applying colors such as red, yellow, green, and blue over a glazed surface, which is then fired again at a lower temperature.
