The history of the Funaki Kiln is also the history of Fujina Ware. The Funaki Kiln in the Shimane prefecture has 300 years of history tracing back to the Edo period. As its latest inheritor, the 6th generation Funaki potter, Funaki Shinji (b. 1960)'s focus on functional wares is inherited both from the history of the Funaki Kiln's exportation of pottery for general use, and from the kiln's encounter with the Mingei movement. The son of the 5th generation Funaki potter Funaki Kenji (b. 1927), Funaki Shinji continues bearing the Mingei torch in the historical potter family through sensitive forms and overglazes. Using clay from the Shimane prefecture, he creates traditional, eggshell colored vessels using traditional firing techniques, or slip clay.
