Born as the eldest son of Kaneshige Sozan, the artist began his ceramic practice at his father's Maruyama Kiln after graduating from university. In 1982, when Sōzan established a new kiln in Bizen, he inherited the Maruyama Kiln and became independent. From the outset of his career, he chose not to participate in juried exhibitions, instead focusing exclusively on solo exhibitions. Beginning with his first solo exhibition at Okayama Takashimaya in 1979, he has continued to present his work primarily through exhibitions at Takashimaya department stores in Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto, as well as exhibitions featuring members of the Kaneshige family.
Distinguished by his exceptional wheel-throwing skills and rigorous study of ceramic materials, he creates works with powerful, sculptural forms and a commanding presence. At the same time, his innovative approach reflects a contemporary interpretation of Bizen ware, earning him recognition as one of the leading figures among modern Bizen ceramic artists.
