Miwa Kyūsetsu XIII (Kazuhiko, b. 1951) is the third son of National Living Treasure Miwa Kyūsetsu XI (1910–2012) and the younger brother of Ryōsaku Miwa. He studied in the United States from 1975 to 1981, including at the San Francisco Art Institute, where he was influenced by the American ceramic artist Peter Voulkos and inspired by the dramatic landscapes of the American West. After returning to Hagi, Yamaguchi, Japan, in 1981, he began creating ceramics at Miwa-gama, the historic kiln of the Miwa family. His work has been presented in major exhibitions, including The REI: The Tea Ceremony Room of Kazuhiko Miwa at the Yamaguchi Prefectural Museum of Art in 2000, as well as exhibitions of modern and contemporary Japanese ceramics in 2002 and 2003. In 2019, following his brother Ryōsaku’s retirement, he succeeded to the family title of Miwa Kyūsetsu XIII. His works are characterized by bold, sculptural forms, with red clay peeking through the rich white Hagi glaze. Inspired by the grandeur of nature, his ceramics express its power and scale within the world of tea ceramics.
