Koyama Tomonori (b. 1953) is a contemporary ceramic artist who specializes in Minoyaki, glazes from the Mino area comprising the celebrated glazes Oribe, Shino, Kiseto, Kuro-Oribe and more. Koyama studied under the celebrated Minoyaki artist, Takiguchi Kiheiji (b. 1937) for a number of years before establishing his own kiln in Togakushi, Nagano. His wood-fired Oribe stays true to the traditional methods of firing. His glazes are warm and carry a soothing, fluid quality, while his forms often comprise a contemporary geometric logic. He has exhibited widely in Japan in galleries and department store exhibitions and his works are deeply appreciated for their unique blend of tradition and contemporary style.
