Oishi Sayaka’s decorative surfaces behold a parade of flora and fauna. She is fascinated by the duality of human and nature, and how this relationship is treated in different religions and cultures. Oishi examines the way that beauty in human society and nature is the result of necessary survival.
When Oishi Sayaka was eating an apple, she noticed that the bite mark she left on the surface resembled an ear. For that reason, all her apple sculptures hold an ear. When she begins decorating, she begins with the ear, paying attention to balance and rhythm. Tuned in with evoking the senses in her pieces, she then picks out other forms from her collections of over 200 handmade moulds and engraves them onto her pieces in relief, impromptu. This improvisation process allows her to contently portray her emotions into the piece. She conjures fantastical, almost allegorical imagery in her works.
