Tsuboshima Dohei, born in Osaka in 1929, embarked on an unconventional path to becoming a master potter. At age 17, he apprenticed under Kawakita Handeishi, a salaryman-turned-potter known for his diverse talents as a poet, painter, and calligrapher. Kawakita’s multifaceted approach significantly influenced Tsuboshima's style, leading him to develop a keen sensitivity to image and composition on three-dimensional surfaces. After Kawakita's death in 1963, Tsuboshima succeeded him at the Hironaga Kiln in Mie prefecture. Throughout his career, Tsuboshima mastered various clay styles and techniques, with particular acclaim for his overglaze red and green enamel decoration on porcelain and his painterly-style Shino glazes. His functional Iga pieces are also notable highlights of his work.
