Kumakura (1920-1985) was a pioneer of sculptural and avant-garde ceramics movement “Sodeisha (走泥社)” that distinguished itself as a formal category in the Japanese ceramic industry during the mid 20th century. His interest in sculptural, figurative and organic forms bleeds into his functional wares, which take on anthropomorphic, geometric, and abstract shapes.
This vessel is an example of his functional work, with an organic wide mouth and his iconic dappled Oribe glaze.
