Arguably Japan’s most popular ceramic artist, Fukami Sueharu (b. 1947) beautifully utilizes pure celadon blue to great and original effect. His mastery of celadon glaze allows him to produce a wide variety of blues: clear sky blue, deep rich aqua, pale blue-grey, and a pure blue that is almost white have all appeared in his oeuvre. He makes both functional and sculptural works, but all of his ceramics illustrate a purity of design and originality of spirit that are the mark of a true master. Fukami’s ceramics are widely collected and can be found in many museum collections internationally. He is truly a treasured innovator of the ceramic arts.

This piece is beautifully balanced with an asymmetrical elegance.
