Based in Aichi Prefecture, he has been recognized as a Holder of Tokoname City-designated Intangible Cultural Property (2016), and serves in key roles including Standing Executive Committee Member of the Japan Crafts Association Branch and Director of the Japan Sencha Crafts Association. Working within the rich tradition of Tokoname ceramics, Koie specializes in teapots, particularly the kyusu form (one handled Japanese-style tea pots for brewing loose leaf tea). His work is distinguished by the use of Tokoname’s characteristic red clay, alongside experimental approaches such as bird clay, kiln-fired black finishes, red polished surfaces, and brocade stripe effects achieved through his own unique firing techniques. A feldspar glaze and smoking process during firing imbue his works with subtle, atmospheric tones reminiscent of dawn light. This kyusu exemplifies Koie’s mastery of both tradition and innovation, combining refined craftsmanship with nuanced surface expression, making it both a functional vessel and a work of contemporary ceramic art.
