It is made from clay fired to a rich red hue, finished with a subtle ash glaze. Golden streams drip over its surface, accentuating the clay ribboning that creates openings on its top, anticipating incense smoke rising from its belly. The gourd-shaped form is unique and comprises two detachable parts, with its interior glazed golden. At its base, three feet offers a sense of anthropomorphism that brings the entire vessel to life.
The Kiyomizu Rokubei family of ceramicists boasts a celebrated history of over 200 years in Kyoto. The family, now helmed by Rokubei VIII, is celebrated for bringing Kyō ware into contemporary light.
