Yanagihara Mutsuo, born in 1934 in Kochi City, is a renowned Japanese ceramic artist who studied under Kenkichi Tomimoto (1886–1963) at the Kyoto City University of Arts. His artistic journey took him beyond Japan, as he was invited to teach at the University of Washington and Alfred University in the United States, where he spent around five years during the 1960s and 70s. There, he was deeply influenced by the American art movements of Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art.

Upon returning to Japan, Yanagihara gained significant attention for his bold use of gold and silver glazes, creating dynamic and striking ceramic works. This Yellow Oribe Teabowl (黄織部茶碗), crafted in 1989, exemplifies his unique interpretation of traditional Oribe aesthetics. The vibrant yellow glaze and the modern, beautiful form of the teabowl reflect his innovative spirit, bridging the traditional techniques of Japanese ceramics with contemporary artistic influences.

Yanagihara’s work stands out for its fusion of Western art movements and Japanese craftsmanship, making his pieces highly sought after by collectors who appreciate the intersection of cultural traditions and modern artistic expressions.
