Tsukamoto Kaiji (1912-1990) is a Living National Treasure known for his celadon elegance. This set of celadon plates features “hidden” wave patterns. The elusive decoration gradually reveals a delicately carved complex pattern within a landscape of pure blue and white.
Kaiji is the seventh generation Tsukamoto, inheriting the family’s practice of crafting beautiful porcelain in the style of Chinese Ding ware techniques. Aptly, he studied under the scholar of Chinese ceramics, Koyama Fujio, and pursued further research on Chinese Song dynasty celadon, carving his own path as a celadon potter who mastered the Seihakuji glaze type.
