This striking bowl by Kamoda Taro (b. 1963) is distinguished by its dramatic interplay of deep blue and subdued red tones, which appear to emerge from a dark, almost black ground. Finely incised vertical lines animate the surface, creating a subtle rhythm of light and shadow that shifts with the viewer’s perspective.
The vessel’s textured surface emphasizes the tactile qualities of the clay, conveying both material presence and a sense of quiet monumentality. Balancing strength with refinement, the work demonstrates Kamoda’s sensitivity to form, texture, and color, resulting in a powerful yet contemplative ceramic expression.
Born in Mashiko in 1963, Kamoda began working in ceramics in 1983 and has since exhibited extensively throughout Japan. Through a series of solo exhibitions at galleries and department stores nationwide, he has developed a distinctive artistic voice grounded in the rich ceramic traditions of Mashiko while pursuing a highly individual contemporary aesthetic.
With its commanding form and nuanced surface treatment, this work exemplifies the artist’s continued exploration of the expressive possibilities of clay.
