KatoShuntai, a rare master potter in the more than 1,000-year history of Seto ware, was born into the 10th generation of the "Nihei" family. The Nihei family was called back to Seto from Mino by Yoshinao, the first lord of the Owari Clan, and was a family line of potters who served the Owari Clan from generation to generation. After retiring from this position, he was invited by Masatomi Takekoshi, a retainer of the Owari domain, to build a kiln in Imao, Mino (present-day Imao, Hirata-cho, Kaizu City) and produce pottery. Shuntai's works, which are said to have been made by Shuntai, are diverse, ranging from glazes such as Oribe, Kizeto, Shino, and Omamii, and techniques such as Sometsuke and Mishima, to copies of Hagi and Takatori.
