Hara Kiyoshi was designated a Living National Treasure in 2005 for his use of iron-based glazes following in the footsteps of both his teachers, Shimizu Uichi and Ishiguro Munemaro to become the third Living National Treasure designated for using iron-based glazes. This charming small piece by Hara, shaped like a gourd (hyotan), showcases a refined, balanced form covered in a soft white glaze with polychrome red enamel (Aka-e) painted decoration. The piece is adorned with a delicate lattice-like design in red and green, giving it a warm, inviting appearance.
