This playful piece by Ichino Masahiko (b. 1961) has an anthropomorphic quality: its silhouette recalls a cartoon-like figure standing upright, feet together like a little soldier at attention. Framed by panels of orange and black, the body features Ichino’s signature use of salt-infused clay. When fired at a high temperature, the salt reacts with the surface to produce a vivid vermilion hue, a hallmark of his treatment of stoneware.
Ichino is a leading figure in the contemporary Tamba pottery scene. His work blends the language of geometric abstraction and modernist architecture with the sensibility of traditional studio ceramics. A recipient of the Grand Prix at the 13th Japan Ceramics Exhibition, Ichino is celebrated for his inventive forms and distinctive surface treatments.
