Sakaegi Masatoshi (1944-2019) masterfully intertwined the fluidity of celadon with the optical purity of porcelain, as his bluish forms seem to seep organically from geometric white stone structures. His work draws inspiration from Shinto shrines, reimagining them as contemporary experiences rather than relics of a spiritual past.

There is a distinct architectural quality to his creations. As the owner of his own design studio, SAKAEGI, he nurtured talent and creativity in the porcelain and clay medium. He mentored many young designers and contemporary artists, blurring the lines between artist, designer, potter, and creative director.

This pair of vases is part of Sakaegi's series titled "Surface Tension." In nature and physics, Surface tension is a property that causes the surface of a liquid at rest to contract to the smallest possible area, allowing dense yet light objects like paper or pond skaters to float on the liquid's surface without sinking. Sakaegi, who was known for his mathematical precision in ceramics, was fascinated by this phenomenon and sought to convey it through the celadon glaze. The glaze drips thickly over the top of the vase, blanketing the mouth and neck, and appears to hang on the edge of the triangular form, intriguing the viewer with its suspended tension. It is certainly an object of curiosity.
