ひさかたの雨も降らぬか蓮葉に溜れる水の玉に似たる見む

Shingu Sayaka (b. 1979) has fashioned stunning ceramic sculptures in the shape of lotus leaves, bringing to mind the celebrated Waka verse above. This verse, from the Manyoshu (Collection of Ten Thousand Leaves)—the oldest surviving collection of Japanese poetry—expresses a deep yearning to witness the serene beauty of raindrops adorning lotus leaves, likening them to jewels. This sculpture immortalizes this image in ceramic- capturing what would be an ephemeral sight of dewdrops.
