This powerful Manyōsai vase by Hayashi Shotaro (b. 1947) exemplifies a highly refined sense of form, achieved through exceptional technical mastery and balance. The surface is enlivened by the artist’s distinctive Manyōsai glaze, producing soft, rainbow-like tones that imbue the work with both intensity and a quiet lyrical quality.
Hayashi Shotaro is one of the leading figures in contemporary Mino ceramics. After initially entering the workforce following high school, he returned to Toki City in 1967 to assist his brother Kotaro, where his desire to create ceramics soon emerged. He received the highest award at the Gifu Prefectural Art Exhibition in 1968, marking the beginning of a distinguished career. In 1974, he established his own kiln.
Since then, Hayashi has received numerous major honors, including selection for the Japan Traditional Art Crafts Exhibition (Nihon Dento Kogei Ten), the Governor’s Prize, and five Best of Show awards at the Asahi Ceramics Exhibition. At the Mino Ceramics Exhibition, he has received all three major distinctions, including the Shoroku Award and the Kobei Award, in addition to the top Mino Ceramics Award.
In 2025, he was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays, one of Japan’s highest honors, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field.
This work is featured in Hayashi Shōtaro Ceramic Works, exhibited in the special exhibition commemorating the 45th anniversary of Tsuruya.
