The pine tree and Japanese crane have long been cherished auspicious symbols in Japan. Both are associated with the Japanese New Year, winter, and as beloved symbols of renewal, rebirth and longevity.
In the scene painted on this E-Seto Tokkuri (sake flask) made in the late Edo period, one imagines looking up towards the sky, and catching the glimpse of a noble red-crowned crane. Both the open sky and bird both framed by the branches of the virtuous pine tree.
