Kondo Yuzo was a celebrated artist, admired internationally for his work in blue & white ceramics. He initially worked as an assistant for Tomimoto Kenkichi between 1921 to 1924, while employed on the recommendation of Shoji Hamada. For many years he was considered one of the most skillful potters in Kyoto, with a dynamic and expressive brush that sought to find new expression within the tradition of Sometsuke. He was designated a Living National Treasure in 1977 for his work in Sometsuke.

This jar boasts a grand, scrolling mountain-scape across its well-formed shoulders. The high-shouldered design is a classic element of Kondo Yuzo's repertoire, and this piece is enhanced by an incredibly expressive natural scene.
