Born in 1949 in Nagasaki, Hasu initially pursued a degree in engineering from the National College of Technology and worked in telecommunications development. However, in 1975, he redirected his career toward ceramics, becoming an apprentice to the potter Shiro Banura (1941–2001) in Iga. Banura was a potter influenced by the celebrated Kitaoji Rosanjin (1883–1959). Rosanjin was a ceramist and writer who championed the idea of living with art through beautifully crafted utensils and floral arrangements. This sensibility, admired by Hasu's teacher, is expressed through Hasu's own work. In his vessels, function merges with beautiful form. In 1979, he founded his own studio in Iga, where he continues to create innovative, expansive Iga vessels.
