Nakamura Takuo (b. 1945) hails from Kanazawa, famed for its craft, ceramics, and its untouched-by-time traditional districts and was one of few places to not be damaged during the war. This cultural aspect of the city has deeply influenced Nakamura, who has siphoned from several visual traditions. From the tradition of ceramic craft, he is inspired by Kutani ware. From craft histories outside of ceramic medium, he has been influenced by the forms of decorative lacquer screens. From the perspective of aesthetic philosophy he consolidates the visual themes of Edo Period painting and decorative arts, or “Rinpa” aesthetics. These art historical and material influences truly make Nakamura a pioneer in the category of “Contemporary Craft”.
