Sugimoto Sadamitsu (b. 1935) is regarded as a master of Iga, Shigaraki, and Raku. At age 80, he became a monk at Daitoku-ji in Kyoto, Japan. He is most well known for his tea wares, from water jars to tea bowls, his works are aesthetic anchors to the Japanese tea ceremony. Sugimoto’s pieces are immersed in Buddhist philosophies. This tea bowl is slightly shoe-shaped, with a very slight and sensitive concave face on one side. This shape provides a wonderful grip as one whisks their tea.
