Kawai Kanjiro was a central figure in the Mingei movement. However, in his own ceramics, Kawai worked independently in his Kyoto studio, pursuing an intuitive exploration of glaze and form, largely untouched by Yanagi Sōetsu’s direct influence. This flat jar featuring Kanjiro’s distinctive floral patterns, executed with his signature expressionistic technique, tsutsugaki slip-trailed decoration. The raised slip design is applied over a deep iron oxide underglaze, which fires to a rich black, accented by delicate traces of warm amber.
