Here, a sensitive different shades of grey Shino glaze provides the ground for a beautiful progression of flora. This plate displays a divine symbol: a deer pauses from its graze to look up and examine it's surroundings. Believed to be the divine messengers from Gods and deities in Shinto religion, deers are freely able to roam and wander. This plate recalls the wandering character of deer. Its square form framing it for the beholder as though they are gazing upon a scene from theatre, in line with Wakao's inspiration drawn from the Rinpa school, where literary subjects and motifs give a narrative element to Wakao's pieces. Wakao's artistry is certainly on display here-he has elevated the Shino style to a higher plane through storytelling.
