Sugimoto Sadamitsu (b. 1935) is regarded as a master of Iga, Shigaraki, and Raku. At age 80, he became a monk at Daitoku-ji in Kyoto, Japan. He is most well known for his tea wares, from water jars to tea bowls, his works are aesthetic anchors to the Japanese tea ceremony. Sugimoto’s pieces are immersed in Buddhist philosophies. The category of this vessel “Kensui” refers to a utensil in the traditional Japanese tea ceremony used to carry used, leftover, or “waste” water in the process of making tea. This Kensui is steadfast, with a straight edge unapologetically showing off the ash-glaze on the surface.
