This bold work by the Mashiko artist Koinuma Michio is historically informed: it calls to mind bronze vessels from Han dynasty China, with its rough, dark surface and its strong architectural feel.
Using a high fire in the kiln, Koinuma Michio utilizes the random salt deposits create a concrete-like surface,adding to the sense of weight and history of this piece. Meanwhile, the grey ash deposit on the high shoulder and body recalls ancient Japanese ceramics going back to medieval Sue wares. The raw surface epitomizes the earth and the forms that it takes on: ash, soil, metal, clay...
