Sasayama Yoshito (b. 1953) is an Iga-based potter, whose workshop in the Iga prefecture affirms his position as a craftsman who recalls the purposefully deformed, wabi-sabi aesthetic of Iga ware. His use of local Iga clay shows- the box has an extreme density to it due the heat-resistant character of Iga clay, while the high fired temperature produces the signature Iga reddish hue. and brown-grey ash-like scorch marks on the vessel surface. The raw ash-glazed surface recalls the unglazed surfaces of the Iga adjacent pottery style that recalls earth, smoke, and soil: Shigaraki (coincidentally the neighbour prefecture to the Iga prefecture).

The box reflects Iga's geography while recalling the Momoyama-era historical ware type, wherein the Feudal lord Tsutsui Sadatsugu produced functional wares for domestic use.
