Born in Okayama, Yokoyama Naoki (b. 1970) has had an outstanding career for a relatively younger potter in the Bizen tradition. He studied under KAWABATA Fumio 川端文男 in the 1990s, before going on to establish his own Bizen kiln in 2000. The surface has a somewhat glossy surface on a deep ochre red where the clay has been touched by fire. The large streaks on this large Bizen jar shows off Bizen clay well, while adding a whimsical feel to this sizable work.
He not a typical Bizen artist, he chose his own clay and wedge them. His clay is organic, his approach is authentic and classic. The results are mesmerizing.
1970 Born in Okayama, his father is YOKOYAMA Shusui 横山秋水
1991 Studied at Bizen Ceramic Center
1992 Studied under KAWABATA Fumio 川端文男
