Furukawa Takahisa 古川 隆久 (b. 1940) is a Mashiko-based potter who trained under Hamada Shoji. whose works echo those of his predecessors, yet boast his individual mastery over Mashiko craft. His functional pieces are steeped in poetry, with decorative surfaces embellished with hand-painted scrolling images. This guinomi boasts a beautiful surface-scape showcasing a red enamel painting, with which Furukawa has recalled the ephemeral forms and colours of the seasonal Japanese red spider lily. Or perhaps, he has depicted the weightlessness of a phoenix feather, or the flight of a red butterfly.
