The son of the Living National Treasure Kondō Yūzō (1902-1985), who was designated for sometsuke ware (cobalt blue-glazed porcelain), Kondo Yutaka (1932–1983) also apprenticed under Tomimoto Kenkichi (LNT, 1886-1963). His cobalt patterning on his ceramics are inspired by Korean, Chinese and Islamic porcelain, speaking to the historically transnational foundations of the use of cobalt pigment in the ceramic medium. This jar showcases a beautiful marbling pattern, within which one can spot an abstracted reference to the Evil Eye, an apotropaic symbol heralding from antiquity and the Mediterranean, on a white liquid slip-inlay surface.
