This excellent water jar by Matsui Kosei LNT 松井 康成 (1927-2003) displays a beautiful marbling pattern of creamy greys and ivory tones. The textured surface is reminiscent of a ragged cliffside with a modern touch. Matsui Kosei was a Kasama-based artist who combined his career as a ceramicist and as a Buddhist monk. He was particularly fascinated by Tang Dynasty wares from China, which shows in his works that display marbling patterns (“neriage”) used extensively in the Cizhou kilns during the taste-making Tang Dynasty. These historically informed vessels earned him the title of a Living National Treasure in 1993. This beautiful Mizusashi is absolutely exemplary.
