This piece by the Living National Treasure Suzuki Osamu (Kura) encapsulates a period of work by the artist that stands at the precipice between his folk-craft training in producing functional works and his exploration of sculptural art categories.

This masterful piece was made in the early 1980’s when the artist was in his prime physically and mentally. The construction of this piece stands out from other similarly shaped flower vessel works. This vessel was built in 2 top and bottom parts, and fired and connected together. The seam of this hand-built clay construction shows on the piece, and encourages the beholder to think about built clay processes, while also evoking the geometric abstraction and Op art influences that Suzuki Osamu absorbed into his visual vocabulary.
