Characterized by vibrant glazes and incredibly textured clay, Higashida Shigemasa's powerful Oribe ceramics feature lush pools and flows of glaze across craggy landscapes.

These stunning landscapes become dramatic plates and monumental boxes. Brilliant turquoise lakes of blue glaze occupy the crevices and valleys of his lush green works, whose dynamic surfaces and undulating crests recall wild mountains and cliffs. This rough topography is countered by the serene stillness of the pooled blue glaze, which offers a restful point of contemplation as the eye travels over the surface of his work. Higashida achieves the unstudied artistry of nature, and yet this seemingly natural effect is made possible only through impressive technical skill. In this platter, he has added salt to the Oribe glaze, which has resulted in a bright vivid orange appearance.

Higashida's elegant Oribe and Shino ceramics have received rave reviews from collectors and connoisseurs alike, and have been exhibited widely throughout Japan and abroad, including at Gallery Miyasaka and Takashimaya, Sogo, and Wako department stores. Last year, one of the most prestigious department store galleries gave the artist a solo show, which sold 90 pieces out of 110.
