This piece showcases Murata’s mastery over a rice husk glaze and highlights his painterly sensibilities. On one side, the silhouette of a mountain emerges on the surface of the glaze. On another face, the muted glaze drips down to the foot of the vessel. Its immaculate surfacescape and undamaged body is rare, as a result of Murata’s need to wheelbarrow his works to neighbouring kilns to fire during his time in Mashiko. This resulted in damage during transportation, therefore his works are limited in number. The extant works, such as this piece, are immaculate in condition.
