No. 2 in Sakaegi Masatoshi's (b. 1944) Surface Tension Vase series (表面張力花器).
SAKAEGI Masatoshi connects surreal drips of porcelain with nature’s purification of water, as his bluish forms seep out of angular stone. Shinto shrines also inspire this artist, who reinvents them as contemporary experiences rather than relics of a spiritual past. Certainly, there is something architectural about his work. Sakaegi owned his own design studio, which fostered talent and creativity in the porcelain and clay medium. He was a mentor to many young designers and contemporary artists, and blurred the professional boundaries between artist, designer, potter, and creative director.
