Hayashi Lecture At Hunter College

Sixty-year career of internationally renowned Japanese sculptor in clay
Yasuo HAYASHI celebrated at Dai Ichi Arts from October 4 through Nov. 30, 2005. On October 11, Hayashi will be at the Dai ichi Arts show opening from 5:00pm to 7:00pm.

The optical illusions of the three dimensional ceramic sculptures that define Yasuo HAYASHI's works surprise a viewer's ideas of top and bottom, front and back, real and unreal.

Their illusionary quality makes them highly intellectual viewing experiences for art collectors and unique examples of postwar Japan's ceramic art. For over six decades Yasuo HAYASHI, born 1928, has helped to create an entirely new vocabulary for Japan's large ceramic-making population and given new meaning to the ceramic sculpture.

Earlier in his career, his early works were shown alongside those by stellar international figures such as Wassily Kandinsky and Isamu Noguchi. He has gone on to inspire generations of ceramic artists in Japan who also have found a way to honor the traditions of the past but explore new ways of sculpting clay to great effect.

His personal story is equally unusual: His work is informed by his training as a pilot during World War II. He used his understanding of the peculiarities of space, form and distance to create geometric illusions in clay that redefine viewer perceptions through discovery and joy.

Please mark your calendar on October 5, for a SPECIAL EVENING AND CONVERSATION WITH THE ARTIST will be held at the Museum of Arts & Design at 6 p.m., followed by a reception to meet the artist.
