Yuriko Matsuda: A Singular Perspective
September 7-30, 2004

Opening Reception with the artist: Sep. 7th, 5:00pm-7: 30pm

Yuriko Matsuda has long been recognized as one of Japan’s most significant ceramic artists, and one of the few women to achieve international recognition. Her work has been collected in the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park, National Museum of Taiwan, Denver Art Museum, Barcelona Ceramic Museum, Yale University Art Museum among others.

She attended Kyoto’s City University of Fine Arts in the 1960s, studying with Living National Treasures Kondoh Yuzo and Tomimoto Kenkichi, both known for their work in porcelain. For reasons of “safety” and tradition, women were at the time barred from working on the wheel or using a wood-fired kiln. Matsuda, therefore, concentrated on porcelain and handbuilding, and in her career has transformed a seeming restriction into a liberation. Her work is characterized by traditional enameling techniques and colors (Kutani, Imari, Chinese Ming porcelain colors) employed in a fresh and quirky way on whimsical, untraditional forms. For the show at Dai Ichi, the artist is providing a selection of her acclaimed “body parts”, as well as fruit and vegetable forms.

We are especially pleased to announce that the artist will come to New York during the run of her solo show at Dai Ichi. We look forward to providing you with an opportunity to meet this celebrated artist on Sept. 7, 2004 from 5:00pm to 7:30pm at 249 East 48th St. New York, NY 10017.
