Walking Clay -- figurative
sculpture
In collaboration with Gallery Pahk and Loveed Fine Arts, Dai Ichi Arts presents "Walking Clay --
figurative sculpture" from May 28th through July 2nd, 2005. The opening reception will be held on Thursday, June 2nd from 6:00 to 9:00 pm at 77th Street and Madison Avenue.
The participating artists include Takashi Hinoda, Patricia Lay, Margaret Meehan, Jeffrey
Mongrain, Gilda Oliver, Hirotsune Tashima, Michaelene Walsh, and Patti Warashina.
Dai Ichi Arts pioneers on a group of younger stars both Japanese and Americans. The influence of Japanese subcultures is apparent in both
Takashi Hinoda and Hirotsune Tashima’s* works. Hinoda’s* works imply popular culture of his generation: Anime, manga and the Japanese passion for Kawai (cute) characters.
Tashima challenges his identity in the context of Japanese culture where individuality is traditionally discouraged.
Margaret Meehan’s * depict physical forms of unnatural stillness, mining her source from old photographs of children held in place for unnaturally long poses.
Michaelene (Mikey) Walsh's doll like forms suggest human subconscious, exploring what shadows represent: intangible sadness and longing.
